Hello, I am Sunita Sud, a 55 yrs old school teacher. I had a normal healthy living without any illness, until June 2013 last year, I noticed a small swelling on the side of my neck. I visited a private hospital where they did FNAC which showed inconclusive result. A biopsy was done and it showed features of being a tubercular swelling. Antitubercular therapy was started but after taking the medicines for one month, I started having itching and later, rashes appeared on my body. I visited a general practitioner, a chest physician and a dermatologist for this problem and everyone advised me to stop the medicines for TB and start steroids to decrease the swelling.when no change in the rash and the itching occurred, I consulted a medicine doctor who started Injectable steroid but within 2-3 days , my skin and eyes started turning yellow in colour. My son noticed that my waist size was increasing. We got a liver function test done the next day which reported that my liver enzymes had increased markedly and my bilirubin was 13mg/dl which was much above the normal range. The same night, I started becoming disoriented. The next day, I was admitted to a private hospital in Ghaziabad under a gastroenterologist, where my condition improved sometimes and deteriorated later. I developed breathing difficulty 4 days later and doctors put me on ventilator support.
My family was losing all hopes of my survival due to the deteriorating condition of my health. They shifted me to ILBS the same day. I was admitted in liver coma ICU at ILBS where doctor advised liver transplant to improve my condition. They told my family that chances of my survival were 20% without transplant and 60%-70% with transplant. My younger son who was with me during that time got his tests done for donation but his liver could not be used because he was diagnosed with fatty liver. My husband could not donate his liver because he is 60 years of age and did not fulfill the age criteria. My elder son had flown from Canada that night and when he came to know that his father and brother could not donate their liver he volunteered to do it. His tests were done and though their was some uncertainty whether the transplant would be successful due to his liver anatomy , the doctors went ahead with the operation after counseling the family members. liver transplant surgery was done in ILBS on 30 August 2013.
The transplant was successful. I was kept on oxygen support through endotracheal tube for a week after that and was admitted for a month in ICU during which time the swelling in my body decreased and the rashes disappeared. Then I was kept in deluxe room for a week. Slowly my condition improved to normal. My son who donated his liver to me was kept admitted for a week and discharged later. The doctors changed my medications for TB which were not harmful for my liver. The doctors were very intelligent and the nursing staff was very caring. It has been an year now after my liver transplant and I am living a perfectly normal life and going to school regularly to teach my students. My son is also perfectly healthy and living his life normally in Canada. Thanks to ILBS for bringing me back to life. If ILBS was not there then I may not have been alive to write this letter…..
