My father was diagnosed with Acute Liver Cirrhosis on around March 2012 in a private hospital. With little hope, we thought of consulting doctors in ILBS. Upon consultation with Dr. Vikram Bhatia, my father was advised for a liver transplant surgery. We were referred to Dr. V. Pamecha in the surgery team (the Liver Transplant head and main surgeon) by Dr. Vikram Bhatia. Dr. V. Pamecha and his surgery team told us about the details of the transplant.
We were advised to get all the pre-transplant tests conducted to finalize the date of the surgery. Finally, after all the tests conducted successfully, my father was cleared to get a transplant. On December 2012, my father was operated. The operation was successful and my father was shifted to ventilator (as a normal procedure post-transplant). With his vital signs showing great, he was taken off the ventilator in 24 hours post-transplant. The doctors allowed us to see him from outside the ICU. We waived hands and saw him responding too, which was the sign that he was doing great.
The patients were kept in individual cubicles. The nurses' care in the ICU was brilliant. They were alert 24 hours and were monitoring the patients continuously through CCTV’s and moving to and fro his room from the Nursing Station. With their co-operation and great care, my father could get up and start walking again in the ICU within 3 days. A special attendant was assigned to him taking the oxygen cylinder with him wherever he went. Two more attendants were assigned to make sure that he doesn’t lose balance whenever he wanted to walk. He could not only watch TV inside his cubicle but within 6 days, my father was able to sit on the couch inside ICU and watch his favorite channels. The second week came and he was shifted to a special transplant suite. Here a nurse and a ward boy were assigned to him for 24 hours care. They provided basic amenities like room heater, TV, fridge, cupboard to live comfortably inside the room.
The surgery was so good that he was discharged on the 25th day from the surgery date (although the package was for 1 month). It’s more than a year now. My father now works, walks in the morning every day and even sometimes jogs. Regular follow ups were what were required from us and my father never got admitted to any hospital since then.
All in all, we would like to thank Dr. V. Pamecha and his great surgery team to give a new life to my father, the nurses who were so active and caring, the Transplant coordinator (Mrs. Vibhuti) and the follow up management that the hospital staff does. The genuine advice we got every time from the doctors is what have improved my father’s life and we are indebted to all the hospital staff.
